Visa-free to China: what applies until the end of 2026

Who can travel to China without a visa on an Austrian passport, when you still need one, and how long it takes.

Up to 30 days without a visa

With an ordinary Austrian passport you can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days for business, tourism, visiting family and friends, exchanges and transit. The rule applies until 31 December 2026.

When you still need a visa

  • for work, study, reporting and similar purposes
  • for stays of more than 30 days
  • with a different passport: then it depends on your nationality.

Send us your nationality and travel plans, and we will tell you what you need.

If you need a visa

Your passport must be valid for at least six more months and have two blank visa pages. Which other documents you need depends on your nationality and the type of visa, and we will give you the list for your case.

Processing normally takes 5 to 10 working days, or 2 to 3 working days with an express application.

Fingerprints are not needed at present for short-term visas with stays of up to 180 days, such as family visits, tourism or business. This rule also runs until 31 December 2026. For work, study or long-term family reunion visas you usually still have to give fingerprints in person.

Not in Vienna? You can post your passport to us. Get in touch first so we can tell you which documents you need. Once the visa is issued, we post your passport back to you.

The first consultation is free. See our frequently asked questions for more.

The rules can change at any time. This post reflects the position in October 2026; what our staff tell you for your case is what counts.
